Information About the Department
The Psychology, Sociology and Health & Social Care department offers post-16 courses and is based in the brand new suite of classrooms at Stewart House, Biddenham’s Sixth Form Study Centre. The suite includes a number of computers for student use as well as an interactive whiteboard.
The department offers a range of post-16 courses for both the Gold and Platinum curricula. Each course offers seven timetabled lessons per fortnight, equivalent to 8 and ¾ hours and students are expected to work independently beyond the lesson time. Independent work would typically involve research, note-taking, exam practice, revision and online assessments through Moodle. Moodle courses are available for all options within the department and students are encouraged to access lesson materials, additional resources and online assessment activities via those pages.
Educational visits are a key feature of the department. This includes the AS Psychology students visiting the zoo to conduct animal observations and participating in active research at the University of Northampton. We also welcome lecturers from the University of Bedfordshire who present their research to both Sociology and Psychology students. The Health & Social Care students commit to regular voluntary roles at St John’s Special School and local nurseries, gaining valuable applied skills necessary for their course and for their future careers.
