Headline Information
We have had a successful year in MFL.
Several of our students have been examined in home languages and MFL exams.
Our GCSE A*-C percentages in French, Spanish, German and Urdu were all around the national average or higher.
Due to our recent success in A Level, a significant number of our A2 students have recently gone on to study Languages at University.
Information About the Department
As an International School, we embrace language learning and enter students in exams for both home languages and those taught at school. We would like as many students as possible to gain a qualification in MFL, whether it be ASSET or A2.
We are a well resourced department based on the upper floor of Hurst block, with four teaching rooms. Our staff are passionate about language teaching and learning and look to make it an enjoyable and rewarding experience for our students.
We believe that languages need to be brought to life for the students and therefore offer many trips over the course of their studies:
- A French Exchange.
- A German Exchange.
- Cologne trip to the Christmas markets.
- Language study trip to Salamanca.
- Opportunities to take part in Language Conferences.
- Trips to the Goethe Institut.
- Cinema visits for relevant foreign films.
- Participation in events with our twin town, Bamberg.
Our Foreign Language Assistants work with each exam group so that every student has the opportunity to both work with a native speaker whilst also learning more about culture and everyday life in the target countries. Each AS/A2 student will have time to work with the FLA on a one-to-one basis, which helps both their confidence and accent in the foreign language.
We offered Italian for beginners at our Language Centre at Stewart House last year and will be entering our students in ASSET language qualifications for this. We hope to extend this to Mandarin.
Further information can be found in the Modern Foreign Languages section of this website.
